A Birth Code chart can look complicated at first, but you do not need to read everything at once. The simplest way is to read it step by step.
On this site, the explanations mainly follow the Korean Saju tradition.
Step 1. Find Your Day Master
The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar. It is the main starting point in chart reading because it represents the core self.
This is the reference point for understanding the rest of the chart.
Step 2. Look at the Four Pillars
A Birth Code chart has four pillars:
- Year Pillar
- Month Pillar
- Day Pillar
- Hour Pillar
Each pillar shows a different part of life. At the beginner level, the goal is not to read every symbol separately, but to see the overall structure first.
Step 3. Check the Five Elements
Next, look at the balance of the Five Elements in the chart.
Ask simple questions:
- Which elements appear often?
- Which elements appear less?
- Does one type of energy stand out?
- Is the Day Master supported, weakened, controlled, or drained?
This helps you understand the chart’s general condition.
Step 4. Read the Energies in Relation to the Day Master
The chart is not read by counting elements alone. It is also read by how those energies relate to the Day Master.
In simple terms:
- Support strengthens the self
- Self adds more of the same energy
- Output shows what the self expresses
- Wealth shows what the self controls
- Order shows what controls or guides the self
This is what turns the chart from a set of symbols into a readable structure.
Step 5. Read the Chart as a Whole
A Birth Code chart should be read as a whole pattern, not as separate pieces.
Ask:
- What is the central energy of the chart?
- What looks balanced?
- What looks excessive?
- What looks weak?
- What kind of overall pattern is forming?
This is often more useful than focusing too much on one symbol by itself.
Common Beginner Mistakes
Common mistakes include:
- looking at only one symbol
- treating one element as always good or bad
- ignoring the Day Master
- reading traditional meanings too literally
- forgetting the overall balance of the chart
A Simple Starting Order
If you are new, begin in this order:
- Find the Day Master
- Look at the Four Pillars
- Check element balance
- See how the energies relate to the Day Master
- Read the overall pattern
