Heavenly Stems (天干)

What They Are

Heavenly Stems are a set of ten symbols used in the Birth Code Chart (Saju). Each chart uses only four of them—one for each pillar—placed at the top of the year, month, day, and hour pillars.

Heavenly Stems in chart

These ten stems come from the Five Elements combined with Yin and Yang. Each element appears in two forms, creating a total of ten.

In simple terms:

  • Wood (木) → Yin (-) Wood, Yang (+) Wood
  • Fire (火) → Yin (-) Fire, Yang (+) Fire
  • Earth (土) → Yin (-) Earth, Yang (+) Earth
  • Metal (金) → Yin (-) Metal, Yang (+) Metal
  • Water (水) → Yin (-) Water, Yang (+) Water

This means Heavenly Stems are not separate from the Five Elements. They are more detailed versions of them.

Why They Matter

Heavenly Stems show how energy appears on the surface. They represent the visible and external expression of energy.

This matters because not all energy is expressed in the same way. Even if two charts contain the same element, the way that element behaves can be different depending on whether it is Yin or Yang.

In simple terms, the stem tells you how the energy shows itself, not just what the energy is.

How They Work

Each Heavenly Stem carries two layers of information:

  1. The element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water)
  2. The direction of energy (Yin or Yang)

Yang energy tends to move outward. It is more direct, active, and visible.
Yin energy tends to move inward. It is more subtle, contained, and controlled.

Because of this, Heavenly Stems describe the behavior of energy.

They answer questions like:

  • Is this energy active or quiet?
  • Does it express outwardly or stay contained?

Position in the Chart

In every pillar, the Heavenly Stem is placed on top of the Earthly Branch.

This structure is intentional.

The top position represents what is seen first. This is why Heavenly Stems are often described as the outer layer or surface layer of the chart.

They show how energy is expressed externally, while the Earthly Branch (below) represents deeper and less visible aspects.

How to Think About It

You can think of Heavenly Stems as the “visible behavior” of energy.

The Five Elements tell you what kind of energy exists.
The Heavenly Stems tell you how that energy acts.

For example, two people may both have Fire energy.
But one may express it in a strong, direct way (Yang Fire), while another expresses it in a softer, controlled way (Yin Fire).

Same element, different expression.

The Ten Heavenly Stems (Brief Overview)

Each Heavenly Stem represents a specific form of elemental energy.
Below is a simple introduction to all ten:

Ten Heavenly Stems chart explained
  • 甲 (Yang Wood) → growing outward, like a tree
  • 乙 (Yin Wood) → flexible and adaptable, like a vine
  • 丙 (Yang Fire) → bright and expansive, like the sun
  • 丁 (Yin Fire) → focused and steady, like a candle
  • 戊 (Yang Earth) → stable and solid, like a mountain
  • 己 (Yin Earth) → soft and supportive, like soil
  • 庚 (Yang Metal) → strong and firm, like raw metal
  • 辛 (Yin Metal) → refined and precise, like a jewel
  • 壬 (Yang Water) → powerful and flowing, like the ocean
  • 癸 (Yin Water) → quiet and subtle, like rain

One-Line Summary

Heavenly Stems are the visible expressions of the Five Elements, shaped by Yin and Yang, showing how energy behaves on the surface.
