What They Are
Earthly Branches are the lower part of each pillar in a Birth Code chart (Saju).
Each pillar has two parts: the Heavenly Stem on top and the Earthly Branch below.
There are twelve Earthly Branches in total. However, a single chart uses only four of them—one for the year pillar, one for the month pillar, one for the day pillar, and one for the hour pillar.
Like the Heavenly Stems, Earthly Branches are part of the basic structure of the chart. They are one of the two main symbol systems used to build the Four Pillars.
Why They Matter
Earthly Branches matter because they represent a deeper layer of energy in the chart.
While Heavenly Stems show how energy appears on the surface, Earthly Branches show what lies underneath. They are often understood as the inner, supporting, or underlying part of each pillar.
This means they add more depth to the chart. They do not simply repeat what the stem already shows. Instead, they provide another layer of meaning that helps explain how energy is held, rooted, or supported.
How They Work
Each Earthly Branch is connected to one of the Five Elements.
However, the branches are more complex than the stems.
A Heavenly Stem usually presents energy in a clear and visible way.
An Earthly Branch, by contrast, carries energy in a more layered form.
This is why Earthly Branches are often seen as richer in structure. They may appear less obvious at first, but they contain important information that becomes more meaningful as you continue learning.
At the beginner level, the most important point is simple:
Heavenly Stems show the outer expression of energy, while Earthly Branches show the deeper base of that energy.
Connection to Time
Earthly Branches are also closely connected to cycles of time.
Traditionally, they are used to describe repeating patterns and natural rhythms. They are part of a twelve-part cycle, which is why there are twelve Earthly Branches in total.
Many people first encounter them through the twelve animal signs of the East Asian zodiac. These animal signs are traditionally linked to the twelve Earthly Branches.

However, in Birth Code (Saju), the branches mean more than the animal signs alone.
The animal symbols can help people remember the branches, but in the chart, Earthly Branches function as structural symbols of energy and time. They are part of how the chart organizes deeper patterns.
Position in the Chart
In each pillar, the Earthly Branch is placed below the Heavenly Stem.
This lower position reflects its meaning. It represents the underlying layer rather than the visible surface.
The stem is what appears above.
The branch is what sits below and supports it.
Together, they form one complete pillar.
Because of this, every pillar contains both an outer and an inner aspect:
- the Heavenly Stem shows how energy is expressed
- the Earthly Branch shows what supports, contains, or grounds that expression
This relationship is one of the most important ideas in understanding pillar structure.
How to Think About It
You can think of Earthly Branches as the deeper foundation of each pillar.
If the Heavenly Stem is the part of energy that shows itself openly, the Earthly Branch is the part that holds that energy underneath.
In simple terms:
- the stem is more visible
- the branch is more rooted
This does not mean one is more important than the other. Both are necessary. A pillar is complete only when both parts are understood together.
At this stage, you do not need to memorize all twelve branches or study their deeper contents in detail. What matters first is understanding their role in the structure of the chart.
One-Line Summary
Earthly Branches are the deeper and underlying part of each pillar, showing the inner layer of energy and its connection to time, structure, and support.
